In PGI Chandigarh, distant blood relatives were prevented from making organ donations for a period because there wasnt an authorization committee.

As Per the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act 2011 revised Act, the UT administration has reconstituted a hospital-based authorization committee in PGI. According to UT Health Secretary Yashpal Garg, this is the first time the UT administration has notified PGIMER under the modified Act. Before this, the institute operated under central government notifications.

The committee will be presided over by the PGI medical superintendent along with six other members, including the director, health services, UT, secretary of health, UT, head of the microbiology department PGI, K Selvaraj, former DGP Haryana, head of internal medicine, PGI and Prof Keshav Malhotra of the department of evening studies, Punjab University.

To expedite approvals and assist patients in need, the authorization committee will make its final decision regarding the approval or denial of a transplant within 24 hours following the meeting.
